A PLOS One investigation revealed that there are at least 170 trillion plastic particles floating in the oceans and seas of the planet, and this number accounts only for the surface layers. We still lack data from the deep layers and ocean floors, so this number could be much larger. It is estimated that by 2040, this figure will more than double. We need actions focused on much more than just cleaning up the mess.
