Global Ocean Treaty

Global Ocean Treaty

The international treaty that will protect 30% of the oceans has been approved. In the world, over 60% of the oceans are international waters, meaning they don't belong to anyone. Since there are no regulations for biodiversity protection in these areas, some countries and companies have taken advantage to massively expand their fishing industry. Consequently, Chinese vessels engage in massive fishing right on the edge of our exclusive economic zones. This agreement lays the groundwork for the creation of protected areas in waters that don't belong to anyone.
