In Colombia, 10.3 million tons of solid waste were generated (SSP, 2018). On average, Colombia disposed about 30,081 tons/day of solid waste. The average figure of solid waste generation in a Colombian household is 4.3 kg/day (DANE, 2018).
It is important to highlight that plastic consumption in Colombia is 1,250,000 tons/year (2019, DANE) in raw materials, materials and packaging consumed and purchased. In addition, on average, a Colombian generates 24 kg per year (DANE, 2018).
There are approximately 150 million tons of plastics in the ocean and approximately 8 million tons of plastics enter the ocean annually. The amount of plastic entering the ocean each year is predicted to increase to about 16 million tons by 2030, and to approximately 32 million tons by 2050. Crawford (2017).
